Practical guide

Measure whether a website change helped

Record a baseline, change one meaningful element, and judge the outcome rather than the amount of activity.

Save the baseline

Record the goal, eligible visitor count, completions, date range, traffic sources and relevant device mix. Include known tracking gaps. For paid acquisition, record spend and activated customers alongside signups.

Change one decision

Start with a headline, a next-step link or a verified form obstacle. Changing the offer, headline and traffic targeting together makes it hard to interpret which change mattered. Keep a simple dated note of what shipped.

Use comparable traffic

A before-and-after comparison can be affected by campaigns, seasonality and returning users. If a proper randomized experiment is feasible, use it. Otherwise describe the result as an observed change and record the differences between periods.

Count success, not only clicks

More CTA clicks are useful only if they lead toward the goal. In Conviz acquisition, activation means a connected website receiving an observed visit. A signup without installation is an earlier stage. Placeholder conversion values must not be presented as revenue.

Allow uncertainty

A small sample can fluctuate substantially. Report actual counts and rates, and avoid declaring a winner when evidence is thin. Keep collecting comparable data or revise the hypothesis. A higher conversion rate alone does not establish causality.

Continue the workflow

Inspect your own website’s behavior.

Connect your site, confirm incoming visits, and choose a goal worth measuring.
